Deepthi bakes at Muffin Break. Ask her why she has stayed and she does not talk about the muffins.

"I want to go home happily in the evening, and no stress. That is why I am still working in this centre."

She came to Australia 13 years ago and describes herself back then as a very shy girl. Baking was the thing she loved, so that is where she started. The talking came later.

"After joining in this sector, I am more talking to the people. My favourite thing in Altona Gate is serving the customers."

If you are coming in to knock a few things off the list, her way of doing it is not a bad order to follow.

Coffee first

Muffin Break is on Lower Ground, located right in-front of the travelators. Coffee, freshly baked muffins, scones, quiches and pies, with the bakers in from early.

Deepthi's pick is the choc chip muffin, which she admits to eating while she bakes.

Then the list

Most of what you came for is on the way back to the car.

Coles and Aldi for the groceries. Kmart for whatever the house needs this week. Chemist Warehouse for the script or the everyday bits. Sacca's Fine Foods if you want something better than the usual for dinner.

No queue, no hunting for a park

Free undercover parking, and the centre is small enough that you are not walking laps to find things.

That is the part Deepthi keeps coming back to when she talks about the place. Easy in, easy out, and everyone here knows each other.

"Everyone around here are very close and friendly to me."
