This International Security Officer Day, 24 July, we’re recognising two of the friendly faces who help keep Altona Gate safe, welcoming, and running smoothly every day — Vijay and Jake.
Between them, they bring a mix of long-standing experience and fresh perspective to the security team. Vijay has worked in security for over eight years, first at Keilor Downs before settling into his role here at Altona Gate. Jake, meanwhile, joined the team just over a year ago, and has quickly become a trusted presence around the centre.
For both, the role is about far more than what meets the eye.
“I’m here to help customers, keep them safe and satisfied,” says Vijay. “A good day is when I see customers happy and smiling — that’s very satisfying.”
Jake agrees, adding that what he enjoys most about the job is the variety and unpredictability. “No two days are the same. There’s always something different. And it can be complex — you need to be able to adapt at a moment’s notice. People might not realise that.”
That element of unpredictability is something both men have come to embrace, and it’s what makes their work both challenging and rewarding. Vijay recalls many moments over the years that have stayed with him — especially the simple but powerful act of helping people in need.
“I’ve helped a lot of people over the years,” he says. “Things like helping someone find their car — you wouldn’t think it’s a big deal, but people get emotional, they’re really grateful. Those moments are very meaningful.”
Jake shares a similar philosophy: “If everyone goes home happy, I go home happy.”
When asked to describe their jobs in a few words, their answers say it all. For Vijay, it’s “satisfying, challenging and rewarding.” For Jake, it’s “challenging, fulfilling, and full of benefits.”
We’re incredibly proud of the work Vijay, Jake, and the entire security team do — often behind the scenes — to make Altona Gate a safer, friendlier place to shop. If you happen to see them on your next visit, don’t be shy to say hello. They’re always here, helping in ways you might not even realise.
